Newly diagnosed with an autoimmune condition?
I know how you feel.
You are probably in a roller coaster of emotions. Totally normal, and part of the process of coping with such big news. Let the emotions come, let them be and let them go.
On one hand, you are relieved to finally have answers to your questions, to finally have a name to put on all your chronic symptoms.
On the other hand, you feel overwhelmed and scared what that means for you going forward, and you are not sure where to start.
Looking back on my own diagnosis 7 years ago, I wanted to share a few of my learnings and perspective through this process. Perhaps they can give you some guidance, hope and inspiration.
The importance of a diagnosis
Receiving a diagnosis, which can be months for some, years for others, provides a certain sense of relief and peace of mind. Finally knowing what is causing all these chronic symptoms can alleviate the mental stress of not understanding what is going on and stop the never-ending visits from one doctor to another.
You can now connect with a practitioner best suited to support the management of your condition (hint hint, look to find a Functional Medicine doctor who will explore the root causes). You can connect with others who are going through the same challenge. You can start working towards your next steps to find the best approach which is unique to your situation.
Information is power
Take the time to really understand your autoimmune condition, its symptoms, signs of progression, treatment options, lifestyle changes etc so you can become an informed and proactive advocate of your own health. This will help you to gain clarity on what is in your control, and thus empower you to address your health and wellness in a sustainable way.
Take it slow and trust your intuition
There is a lot going on right now. So much information thrown at you, oftentimes conflicting. Maybe you spend hours on google searching for solutions. Trust your intuition as you decide which treatment path is best for you (type of practitioner, medication, lifestyle changes). Then take your time and be patient as you start making changes. One step at a time.
Your health is a lifelong journey
While the diagnosis is a warning sign that something is out of balance in your body, it’s also an opportunity to invest even more in your health and well-being (something you will never regret!). It's a continuous journey of growth, new insights and learnings. You will learn to strengthen your mind-body connection, to listen to your needs, and to engage in self-experiments to find what works best for you.
You are not alone.
Seek help. Surround yourself with people ready to support you.
Sending lots of love and strength your way.
