Sustainable Health: Focus On What You Can Control
How to create sustainable health? Focus on your healthy foundation.
Below a list of essentials to create a strong balance in your body, to maximize your ability to get well, stay well and help prevent diseases in the first place.
Sleep: this is so key. Chronically sleep-impaired people can’t live vibrant and energetic lives. At night, prepare your brain to wind down by turning off full-spectrum light one hour before sleep; choose quieter activities that resonate with you and help you to relax; quiet the digestion before going to sleep
Play: it’s not all about productivity! Allow time to incorporate daily play in your life; laugh; relax; have fun; play sports; find activities that give you a vibrant positive energy
Go outside & move: every day, opt to spend time outside; take a break from the desk and screen, breath in fresh air; an opportunity to connect and appreciate nature; activate your parasympathetic nervous system mode that allows digestion, relaxation, healing and ease
Eat real food: whole, natural, unprocessed foods, and beverages. Vegetables, proteins, fruits, legumes, nuts/seeds… chemical flavorings, preservatives, sweeteners, cheap ingredients in other food are not fueling your body to heal or be at its best
Eat organic when you can: Most pesticides are endocrine-disrupting agents and can cause big shifts in hormone balance. When possible, maximize nutrition by purchasing local, fresh produce on which no pesticides have been used
Pay attention to refined oils, flours and sugar: the 3 big culprits for inflammation, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and chronic conditions. Reducing and even removing those will have a beneficial impact on your gut microbiome, which is so central to our immune system and to fight off infections
Protect your skin: whatever you put on your skin can go right into the systemic circulation (your bloodstream). In reality, the idea is that you could eat what you put on your skin. Starting over again and choosing your beauty and personal hygiene products with this truth in mind can have a profound impact on your health deep inside. Read the labels and try to minimize the toxins and chemicals you apply on your skin
Manage stress: we all know how important this one is! Take some time to slow down, go within, connect with your body and needs. Mindfulness practices are a great way to raise awareness for your current mental and physical state; gratitude and journaling practices; yoga; deep breathing
Believe in yourself: trust yourself and your actions; challenge your inner critic which is often another big source of stress holding you back; honor who you are and what makes you happy; choose activities that are fun and fulfill you
Let’s create health. One choice at a time. One day at a time.
